In the US, a closely-watched economic indicator - The University of Michigan Survey of Consumer Confidence Sentiment - has come in better than expected with a reading of 74. Market consensus was for a reading of 71.5. Earlier, European shares turned negative after a senior euro zone government source said ratings agency Standard & Poor's was set to downgrade several, unspecified euro zone countries on Friday.
